kidney preamp playback

from recording your organs by Dwight Schenk

/

lyrics

I always thought I liked my voice. Maybe not loved. But a fairly strong like.
And then a friend brought over a tape recorder.
We recorded our voices and laughed.
We laughed at everything really.
But then he played it back and I stopped laughing.
It was confusing. Was that… me?
I didn’t like the way I sounded.
He rewound the tape and played it again, and again, and again.
And each time I liked my voice a little bit less… until I just couldn’t stand it.
I ripped out the tape and smashed it. I smashed it till it couldn’t playback anything ever again.
He asked what was wrong, but I… I couldn’t use my voice.
I ran home tears rolling down my cheeks.
And I never used my voice again.
Until now.

But what do I say?
